Using split track recordings

With the advent of high fidelity audio back in the early 1950’s, stereo media has been the norm.  A lot of technological progress has been made in the last 60 years, but stereo is still the norm.

Stereo is simply the synchronized application of two mono audio signals.  Some early stereo recordings (LPs) would place the soloist in one channel and the background vocals in the other.  This made for a “cool” effect for pop music and demonstrates the great potential for the Sunday Audio Songbook.

The Sunday Audio Songbook is available in a split track format.  This arrangement places the piano and organ accompaniment in the left audio channel and the vocal ensemble in the right audio channel.  With this option. we can change the balance of the two channels as they are being presented to the congregation through the sound system.

Sometimes in a live event we need more vocals while at other time we require less.  If both channels are set equally then the balance will be good for listening,  but when the congregation is singing along we may need to adjust the balance.

The largest majority of sound reinforcement systems in churches are mono, even though they may have more than one speaker.  By combining the instrument channel and the vocal channel together into a mono signal at the mixing console, we get the most effective application of the Sunday Audio Songbook for leading congregational singing.

A CD player with both left and right audio outputs is required.  Both audio outputs need to be patched into the sound system mixer to separate channels.  This may be different than your system’s current configuration.  We need separate controls for each audio channel – instruments and vocals.

It is neither effective nor advisable to combine the audio outputs from a CD player with a “wye” connector.  It is, therefore, necessary to use separate audio patch cables and separate audio channels on the mixer.  This allows us to achieve the greatest effect for the accompaniment tracks from the Sunday Audio Songbook.
